Theatre Elision 2018-2019 Season
Remembering Pins and Needles
Music by Harold Rome ~ Book by Cindy Polich
Pins and Needles was a Broadway phenomenon, the longest-running show of its time and the only hit musical ever produced by a labor union. It was developed by the International Ladies Garment Workers Union in 1937, originally as amateur entertainment for and by their members. It became an unexpected and huge success with the cast eventually leaving their factory jobs and becoming part of Broadway history. This 75-minute, one-act docu-musical is performed with no intermission.
Ghost Quartet
Written by Dave Malloy
Back by popular demand, Ghost Quartet is a song cycle about love, death and whiskey. A camera breaks and four friends drink in an interwoven tale spanning seven centuries, with a murderous sister, a treehouse astronomer, a bear, a subway, and the ghost of Thelonious Monk. The story draws from fairy tales and “ghost stories”, including Snow White and Rose Red, Edgar Allen Poe’s Fall of the House of Usher, and Arabian Nights. This 90-minute, one-act musical is performed with no intermission.
Gone Missing
Book by Steven Cosson ~ Music and Lyrics by Michael Friedman
Gone Missing is a wry and whimsical documentary musical about things that go missing -- keys, personal identification, a Gucci pump...or one's mind. The show is a collection of very personal accounts of things lost and found, creating a unique tapestry of the ways in which we deal with and relate to loss in our lives. Devised from interviews with real-life New Yorkers by The Civilians, a New York-based company producing new work from creative investigations. This 80-minute, one-act musical is performed with no intermission.
Of Art and Artists
Devised by Cindy Polich
Of Art and Artists is a celebration of art and the artists who create it. Using the poetry and words of Pulitzer-prize winning poet Amy Lowell combined with the music and artwork of several brilliant (and predominantly female) contemporary composers and artists, this production takes the audience on a journey exploring poetry, writing, music, theater, dance, visual art, nature, and the artists themselves. This 75-minute, one-act concert/poetry reading is performed with no intermission.
Sea Cabinet
Music by Gwyneth Herbert ~ Book by Heidi James
Sea Cabinet is a song cycle of linked songs about memory, obsession, love and the sea. A woman walks the beach alone, obsessively collecting every discarded and washed-up object she finds. She takes them home to catalogue each one with the care and rigor of a scientist. Each item sings with the memory of a secret sea-set story. Written and originally performed in England, this will be the U.S. premiere of the work. This 75-minute song cycle is performed in one-act with no intermission.
Ruthless!
Book and Lyrics by Joel Paley ~ Music by Marvin Laird
Back by popular demand, Ruthless! is the story of Tina, a precocious eight-year-old who knows she was born to play Pippi Longstocking in her school play, and will do anything to get the part, including murdering the leading lady! This hilarious musical spoofs Broadway musicals like Gypsy and Mame, and movies such as The Bad Seed and All About Eve. After rave reviews last season, this is a show not to be missed! This 90-minute, one-act musical is performed with no intermission
